My friend recently adopted a stray that was rescued from Mexico. The pup is super cute and has a fun personality. After a few weeks in her new home (the pup) developed diarrhea. It took a while, but the vet diagnosed the pup with cochsydia. I have never heard of it. Apparently cochsydia is a protozoan that can get into the intestinal tract and cause diarrhea which in turn can lead to dehydration.... and I won't go any further with the consequences of the disease gets untreated with flagyl. Flagyl is the same stuff people get treated with when they have a protozoan infection.
I did some googling to find out more info about cochsydia. I was only able to find just a small amount of info. Thankful that I found enough info to be dangerous.
